PV Sindhu entered the 2016 Rio Olympics seemingly as an underdog. The Indian shuttler battled against all odds to make her way to the final of the Olympic Games. However, she fell prey to Spain’s Carolina Marin in the final and had to settle for a silver medal in Brazil. PV Sindhu created history in doing so as she became the youngest Indian to ever win an Olympic medal.
PV Sindhu and her journey to the silver medal in Rio
In a recent interview with a local media, Sindhu spoke about how she had to battle her way to the final at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Sindhu said she was coming back from injury ahead of the tournament which made things harder for her. She added that one must be at peace in order to succeed on the badminton court. PV Sindhu concluded by saying that her hard work and patience is what helped her succeed on the court in Brazil.
“If you remember, before the 2016 Olympics, where I won the silver, I was away from the game because of an injury. Those kinds of phases make it even more difficult and challenging. That is when you tend to look to those who are always with you and at the same time you also do the right things at the right time to be back. You have to be mentally at peace with yourself off the court to achieve your goals despite all odds. That’s what I say — everything needs time to happen. But you should not be found wanting in terms of effort," PV Sindhu told ET.
PV Sindhu on coach Pullela Gopichand
“I felt the worst when Gopi sir made me stand in the middle of the seven courts in the academy in Hyderabad and screamed at me to shout. There was no one there and he had never done this before. He was angry and wanted me to be aggressive. I hated it. Hated it all. Hated him and what I was being asked to do. And I started crying but wasn’t able to shout,” PV Sindhu said in an interview with Economic Times.
