Saina Nehwal was the first Indian badminton player to rank number one in the world, as per the BWF. Nehwal was born on March 17, 1990, in Hisar District. Her parents are Harvir Singh Nehwal and Usha Nehwal. Saina Nehwal has often spoken about the family support that she enjoys which propels her on-court performances. Nehwal has been a huge inspiration for the youth of India, especially women wanting to make their mark in sports.

Saina Nehwal's BWF Career

She in her childhood used to spend a lot of time outside the house playing different sports. She was fond of playing Karate. She also has a brown belt in Karate. However, due to her father’s transfer, she had to move to Hyderabad. In Hyderabad, she was not familiar with the language and was not able to mingle with other kids. That is why she used to play badminton with her mother. Her mother was a state-level badminton champion. She grew fond of the sport and decided to take it up as a profession. Saina also became a player to fulfil her mother's dream.

Her career as a badminton player started at the age of 13 years. Her first major win was the Junior National Championship. After which she went on to play in the Junior Czech Open. In 2004, she went to play the Commonwealth Youth Games and won a silver prize. Since then, she has only seen a rise in her career. In her whole BWF career, she has won 434 matches out of her 642 matches. Which include 612 singles matches, out of which she has won 427 matches. In her doubles career, she has won five matches out of 27 matches. Saina also won two out of three mixed matches. Her win to loss ratio is 67.60 per cent which shows how good she is with her game. Right now, she is preparing for Tokyo Olympics 2020. Saina has already won bronze in the Olympics. Now she aims to win a gold at the Olympics. The qualifiers for the Olympics will start from April 29, 2019, and will go on till April 26, 2020.
