BCCI's (The Board of Control for Cricket in India) Anti-Corruption Unit has registered an FIR against two bookies — Jitendra Kothari and Rakesh Bafna — at the Ashok Nagar Police Station in Bengaluru for cheating, match-fixing and approaching an Indian Women Cricket team player for spot-fixing.
ACU Chief Ajit Singh's statement
“I cannot tell you the name of the player as she is not the culprit and in fact has helped us nab these two individuals. These two individuals had approached one of the women cricketers of the Indian team offering her huge money if she joined hands with them. She informed us about the incident and recorded their conversation. We have registered an FIR and hoping that the two culprits get arrested soon," BCCI's Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) Chief Ajit Singh, told Republic TV over the phone.
Masquerading as a sports manager, Jitendra Kothari got in touch with the cricketer last year through Instagram, offering her managerial services and introduced her to Rakesh Bafna who directly approached her to fix matches, stated Singh while speaking to Republic TV. "In February this year, Kothari again contacted the player and put her through to Bafna claiming that he had a business offer for her. He approached her to fix matches and play according to the script and reportedly offered Rs 1 lakh per match during the India-England series," he added. Bafna also requested the player if the ODI captain of the team could also be roped in for the ‘plan’ the ACU Chief disclosed.
TNPL under ACU scanner
Ajit Singh also said that Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) has also come under the scanner of ACU as it has incidents of attempted approach by bookies to various players for spot and fixing. "We are investigating. No Indian player or domestic player is liked so far. Some players have reported us about the approach. That does not mean they are involved," he observed.
