Sri Lanka's emerging spin talent, Dunith Wellalage, recently updated his Instagram profile picture with a snapshot featuring former Indian cricket captain, Virat Kohli. In the photo, the pair can be seen posing together. This shows the kind of respect Kohli enjoys among budding cricketers from across the globe. The photo was taken during the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023.
For those not familiar with Wellalage's recent achievements, he was ecstatic after claiming a five-wicket haul against India in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match last week. The young left-arm spinner recorded his career-best figures of 5/40. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka ended up losing the game by 41 runs.
What made this achievement even more special for Wellalage was dismissing his idol, Virat Kohli, who managed only three runs off 12 balls during that match. He had previously referred to Kohli as his "dream wicket." In an interview with the host broadcaster, he expressed his excitement about the opportunity.
To commemorate the experience of sharing the field with his cricketing hero, the Sri Lankan youngster has now chosen a photo with Kohli as his Instagram display picture. In the Asia Cup, Wellalage emerged as Sri Lanka's second-highest wicket-taker, right after Matheesha Pathira, with a total of 10 wickets in six games.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, along with Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya, has been rested for the first two ODIs against Australia. He is scheduled to make his return for the third and final ODI against the Australian team at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot on Wednesday, September 27.
