IND vs PAK, Asia Cup: Will rain play spoilsport in Super 4 match? R Ashwin provides update

India and Pakistan are scheduled to clash in a Super 4 match of the Asia Cup 2023 on Sunday, September 10. India reached the last-four stage following a win over Nepal, while Pakistan progressed after finishing at the top of Group A.

As the teams gear up for the big-ticket match at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin provided the weather update. He in a tweet, Ashwin said: "That’s as pretty a morning as one can get for an #INDvsPAK clash. Lots of tickets still available online for the game. #AsiaCup2023."

There has been concern about the weather in Colombo due to persistent rain in the island country. While the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced a reserve day for only IND vs PAK clash, the decision received a widespread criticism for its biasedness. Interestingly, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh cricket boards stated that their consent was taken ahead of the official announcement.

According to metoffice.gov.uk, there is a prediction of thunder shower in the initial hours of the match, which is scheduled to begin at 3 PM IST. Moreover, throughout the day, chances of precipitation is around 70 percent.

ACC receives backlash

Former India cricketer Venkatesh Prasad slammed the Asian Cricket Council following its reserve day decision only for IND vs PAK match. He stated that the organisers have made a "mockery" of the Asia Cup 2023 with their "unethical" decision. 

"What was the pressure to agree on this unreasonable demand, when you aren’t getting a reserve day for your own matches?" Prasad said on 'X' (formerly known as Twitter).

"Why so much generosity to ensure India vs Pakistan isn’t washed out even if it costs your own team a chance to qualify. Can you please explain truly the intent and reason to do so? If true this is absolute shamelessness this. The organisers have made a mockery and it is unethical to have a tournament with rules being different for the other two teams. In the name of justice, will only be fair if it is abandoned the first day, may it rain harder on the second day and these malicious plans not succeed, Prasad added.
