Virat Kohli has been scaling new heights with his batting performances and also managed to set and break a plethora of records over the years. The second day of the ongoing India vs South Africa Test match at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune featured a very special innings from the Indian captain, who dominated the South African bowlers throughout the day and went on to score his seventh double ton in the process. He remained unbeaten at 254 runs as India declared their innings at 601/5. We look at some of Kohli's staggering numbers post the double ton.
Records are made to be broken
Kohli overtook Australia's batting great Don Bradman in terms of runs scored in Test cricket. While Bradman accumulated a tally of 6,996 runs, Virat has now scored more than 7,000 Test runs at an average of over 53 since making his debut in the West Indies in 2011. He has also scored the most double hundreds by any Indian batsman in Test cricket, going past Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, who have scored six double centuries each. The list is still being led by Bradman, who has 12 double centuries to his name.
Kohli’s century also puts him on par with another Australian batting legend and captain Ricky Ponting when it comes to scoring the most number of tons as Test captain, with 19 centuries. Former South African captain Graeme Smith leads the list with 25 of them and it won't be a surprise if the Indian run-machine goes on to break this record too. Kohli also has nine 150 plus scores as captain, once again going past Bradman, who had eight such scores to his name. The Team India skipper improved on his previous best Test score of 243 against Sri Lanka in 2017.
Kohli has now joined England's Wally Hammond and former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene on the 4th spot in the list of most double tons in Test cricket. Only Brian Lara (9), Kumar Sangakkara (11) and Don Bradman (12) have more double centuries than the Indian skipper. He is also the 5th Indian batsman to score more than 250 runs in a Test innings for India after Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid and Karun Nair. He has moved up to seventh position on the list of leading Indian run-scorers.
