The South African team are currently on a 40-day trip to India to play three T20Is and three Test matches. After the limited-overs series ended in a 1-1 draw, the action has now shifted to the longest format of the game. The two teams are currently battling each other out for the ongoing Freedom Trophy which also forms a part of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship. The last time South Africa toured India for a Test series, the visitors received a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of the home team.

After a difficult first two days on the field, South Africa were desperately in need of an inspired performance from one of their top-order batsmen. Luckily for them, their left-handed opener Dean Elgar rescued South Africa’s ship after they were left reeling at 63-4. When the Indian spinners were firing all cylinders, Dean Elgar stitched together crucial 100+ run stands with skipper Faf du Plessis and then with wicket-keeper/batsman Quinton de Kock. The stylish left-hander brought up his 12^th Test ton as the Proteas safely avoided the follow-on. Elgar went onto score 160 runs off 287 balls before he became Jadeja’s second victim in the innings. His innings was laced with 18 boundaries and four sixes and it came at a healthy strike-rate of 55.74.

Elgar’s century could not have come at a better time for the visitors as they were looking straight down the barrel after being reduced to 39-3 on Day 2. At the time, it was advantage-India as the home side were looking all set to gain a huge first-innings lead to push for a 1-0 lead in the series. Riding on Elgar’s century, South Africa are placed at 385-8 at stumps and will go into Day 4 with much-needed confidence for the remainder of the tour.
