The English cricket team is all set to take on New Zealand in a four-match ODI series starting from September 2, 2023. The upcoming ODI series can be seen as a practice for the Jos Buttler-led English cricket team ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. England are the current champions of the 50-over World Cup and have taken many surprising calls while picking up the provisional squad for the upcoming major ODI ICC tournament.
3 things you need to know
- England and New Zealand will take on each other in the opening match of the ODI World Cup 2023
- Both the teams also took on each other in the finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup
- The English team's selection committee has brought back Ben Stokes to their provisional CWC 2023 squad
Jos Buttler's huge words of praise for Ben Stokes
Earlier this month, while England and Wales Cricket Board, announced their squad for the upcoming 50 over World Cup, the major surprise was the inclusion of Ben Stokes. The left-handed batting all-rounder reversed his ODI retirement decision, due to which he was included in the English team's provisional squad. English cricket team's white-ball captain Jos Buttler believes that Stokes' return to the ODI World Cup side, will be very great for cricket. Jos Buttler said while speaking on Sky Sports:
Yes. It's excellent news on all fronts. I think it's great for cricket, a superstar like Ben Stokes in the World Cup. You want to see those players in such showpiece events. It is fantastic that he's made himself available. When a player of that calibre is available, It's a No-brainer, really, that you want him back in your team.
Look at the impact he has had especially in the last couple of World Cups, you know, he's the man in the middle of the crucial moment. So, yeah, we're delighted to have him back. And it's not just cricket, but everything else he brings to the dressing room.
Will England defend their ODI World Cup crown?
The inclusion of Ben Stokes back in the English team's provisional ODI World Cup 2023 squad, will increase their chances of defending their ODI World Cup crown. Stokes played a major role in England's 2019 ODI World Cup win and his 84* run knock pushed the match to a super over against New Zealand. However, when the superover also ended in a tie, it was the boundary count that decided the winner of the match and at last., the three lions won their first-ever ODI World Cup title.
