Frequent retirement speculations
The 38-year-old Dhoni's retirement has been subject of speculation since a couple of years. It was believed that the 2011 World Cup winner would retire after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. The semi-final against New Zealand, which India lost, was the last time Dhoni was seen on a cricket field. Subsequently, he was dropped from the national squad after the World Cup. He has been replaced by Rishabh Pant behind the wickets since then. He has since trained with his regiment in the Territorial Indian Army.
Former players have been quite vocal about their views on the legendary cricketer. Newly elected BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has honoured Dhoni saying that he is one of the greats of the game and he will be respected under his tenure. India head coach Ravi Shastri meanwhile, slammed the Dhoni critics who are making statements about his future. Shastri pointed out that Dhoni timed his retirement in Tests perfectly and that he has earned the right to do it in his own way when it comes to the limited-overs formats of the game.
