Even though India have come close on several occasions, reaching the finals of major events like the 2014 T20 World Cup, the 2017 Champions Trophy, and the 2021 and 2023 World Test Championships, the coveted titles have eluded them.

ICC ODI World Cup: Did Daren Sammy take a jibe at Team India?

Former West Indies World Cup-winning captain Daren Sammy acknowledged India's wealth of cricketing talent. However, he didn't shy away from pointing out their trophy drought. Sammy underlined that while India produces exceptional players like Hardik Pandya and Yashasvi Jaiswal, it's crucial to note they are not consistently clinching international tournaments.

Sammy praised India's domestic cricket structure for regularly churning out exceptional cricketers across various aspects of the game. He specifically lauded the performances of emerging talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mukesh Kumar, and Tilak Varma, who made their respective debuts during the ongoing West Indies tour.

"When you the see the players they’ve been able to produce, Hardik Pandya, (Yashasvi) Jaiswal all the guys they produced over the years but you must also remember who’s winning the international tournaments," Sammy told journalist Vimal Kumar.

"Like I said, Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson who didn’t play, he’s been performing. Hardik Pandya who’s young but he is seasoned in the team. Again, it speaks of the system they have that keeps producing these youngsters," he added.

"Jaiswal has 1800 runs in first-class cricket in nine matches, nine hundreds, and then he comes to Dominica in his debut game, and he looks like he belonged at the international level. That comes from the standard of first-class cricket in India that is allowing the youngsters, when they come in, to be ready for international cricket," Sammy said.

Indian youngsters shine on debut

Jaiswal impressed one and all with his debut Test performance, scoring 171 runs to help India post a mammoth total. While Jaiswal had a modest T20I debut, he is expected to bounce back soon. He will have another opportunity in the fourth T20I match in Florida, with India aiming to level the series at 2-2. Mukesh Kumar and Tilak Varma also had dream debut on the tour. Mukesh made debut in all three formats, while Varma in T20Is. Varma has already smashed two half-centuries in three games for India.
