West Indies cricketer and all-rounder Kieron Pollard is likely to be appointed as the limited-overs captain of the West Indies team. He will be replacing present Jason Holder and Carlos Brathwaite as ODI and T20I captains respectively. According to a report in a Trinidad and Tobago publication, Cricket West Indies (CWI) board of directors, on Saturday, took this decision during their first day of the two-day regular quarterly meeting at the Hilton Trinidad Hotel in Port-of-Spain.
Pollard New West Indies captain?
The report states that the selection committee proposed Pollard as captain and he got support from six directors. Earlier this year at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in England, West Indies came in ninth position among the 10 participating teams. Following their unsatisfying performance at the ODI event, West Indies also suffered defeats to India in a T20I series 0-3 and ODI series 0-2 which was hosted by West Indies. Holder though has managed to retain his position as Test captain despite a 0-2 defeat in a two-match series to India.
Pollard - An all-rounder
Pollard made his ODI debut in April 2006 and played his last match on October 5, 2016, against Pakistan. He was named as a reserve player for the 2019 ICC World Cup and then played in the T20Is against India. In ODIs, the mighty Trinidadian has played 101 matches and scored 2289 runs at an average of 25.71 with three centuries and nine half-centuries along with 50 wickets. Whereas, in 62 T20Is, he has scored 903 runs at an average of 21.50 along with three half-centuries and has taken 23 wickets.
Currently, Pollard is the captain of Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL). TKR has made a solid start to their season with three wins in as many games and will next face Jamaica Tallawahs whom they beat by 22 runs in their second match of CPL 2019. West Indies will next play against Afghanistan in their away tour set to be played in Dehradun from November 5. The tour will see both the sides compete in three T20Is, three ODIs, and one Test.
