Former Team India’s batting coach picks his top 15 for the ICC ODI World Cup
Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has announced his 15-man World Cup 2023 squad. Notably, Bangar's decision to select left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh over all-rounder Shardul Thakur was a significant surprise.
India will host the 2023 ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to take place from October 5 to November 19. India's cricket journey involves participation in the Asia Cup and a brief ODI home series against Australia before this grand tournament. Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector for the BCCI, has acknowledged that the World Cup squad will closely resemble the Asia Cup roster.
Bangar unveiled his 15-member squad for the upcoming World Cup in a video segment on Star Sports. His composition strategy for the mega-event includes employing five specialist batsmen, two wicketkeeper-batters, two spin-bowling all-rounders, one pace-bowling all-rounder, one specialist spinner, and four fast bowlers.
Bangar elucidated the reasoning behind each choice, shedding light on the factors that influenced his selections in various departments. The 50-year-old's insight adds substance to the discussion regarding the composition of his squad for the prestigious tournament. Talking about choosing the best bowlers, he said:
For spin bowling all-rounders, I would prefer both left-armers - Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja.
One pace bowling all-rounder would be Hardik Pandya, while the specialist spinner would be Kuldeep Yadav. The four fast bowlers would be Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh.

Sanjay Bangar's World Cup 2023 squad of 15 players: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh.
Sanjay Bangar's decision to put left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh in his 15-person World Cup team is surprising because Singh has only played three ODIs without taking a wicket. Arshdeep, on the other hand, has an impressive T20I record. He has taken 50 wickets in 33 games, with an average of 18.98 and an economy rate of 8.48. He is not in India's team for the Asia Cup (August 30–September 17).
