Steve Smith, in the Ashes Series, has surpassed his own record of scoring 769 runs against India. He made the last record during the 2014-15 season. In the ongoing fifth Ashes Test match against England, Smith has now a total of 774 runs in the series. As of September 2019, according to ICC player rankings, Steve Smith is the top-ranked Test batsman in the world.
Australia VS England
In the 2019 Ashes series, Steve Smith played a knock of 23 runs in the final innings of the fifth Test before getting caught by Ben Stokes at leg gully off Stuart Broad on his lowest score. The 30-year-old batsman is at his finest form as he scored three 100s, in the four-test games that he played. Smith failed to play in the third as a consequence of a concussion after he was hit by Jofra Archer's bouncer on his head in the second Test. While the 30-year-old has charmed everyone with his batting skills, he has also managed to grab the spotlight on the field as well.
During the 87th over of England's second innings which was bowled by Mitchell Marsh, Marsh had bowled a fuller one outside off stump. Chris Woakes had attempted a drive but was unsuccessful. As the ball took the outside edge and flew wide of Steve Smith who was present at the second slip Smith caught it. Smith dived to his right and pulled off a blinder as Woakes walked back to the pavilion.
ICC Men's World Cup
Steve Smith has made his comeback in international cricket after serving a 12-month suspension. He suffered the suspension as a result of the ball-tampering scandal at Newlands in March 2018. Post the fiasco, the legendary player never looked back. Smith further went on collecting runs in all formats. In the World Cup, he scored 379 runs in ten matches.
