Cricket witnesses its first-ever red  card in CPL 2023

The captain of the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR), Kieron Pollard, decided the first red card in CPL history would be given to Narine, thus creating history for the league. In the final over of the inning, while Sunil Narine was bowling and this scenario occurred. The event happened at Warner Park in St. Kitts during game number 12 between TKR and the SKN Patriots.

This year, the CPL added a special red-card regulation to counter the slow overrates. This regulation states that the fielding team must play with one fewer fielder if they are behind in time management going into the final over. If they are still behind at the start of the 18th and 19th overs, they will also need to set up a fifth and sixth fielder within the circle.

Unfortunately, TKR suffered two setbacks during the match. The penultimate over began with them being restricted to having just three fielders outside the circle. They had to compete in the final over with just ten players on the pitch.

Sherfane Rutherford, captain of the Patriots, made the most of TKR's difficulties in fielding only eleven players. He scored 18 runs off veteran Dwayne Bravo in the final over, helping his team reach a total of 178/5 off of their 20 overs. It's important to note that TKR's star spinner, Sunil Narine, put in a strong effort throughout the entire game. Before being unable to bowl the innings' last over, he had taken three wickets for 24 runs in his first four overs.

Kieron Pollard makes a huge statement on the red card

The TKR captain, Pollard, was not happy with the red card, and after the match, he claimed that the rule seemed ridiculous during the post-match presentation.

To be honest, it will take away the hard work everyone has done (prior to the penalties). We are like the pawns and we are going to do what we are told. We are going to play as fast as we can. If you are penalized for 30-45 seconds in a tournament like this, it is absolutely ridiculous,

However, TKR was not substantially impacted as they tracked down their target of 179 runs in just 17.1 overs, despite the pricey final over caused by having one fewer fielder. They won their first game of the CPL 2023 season against the Patriots.
