The New Zealand cricket team is currently in Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series which will be followed by three T20Is. The Test series will also mark the beginning of the ICC World Test Championship for both sides. Speaking about the Test series, the first Test match which is currently underway at Galle has turned out to be an eventful affair. There was a hilarious moment which involved Trent Boult. The ball got stuck inside the grille of Boult's helmet as he attempted a sweep shot. This left the Sri Lankan players in splits and even the fans trolled the pacer on social media wondering whether he was eating an apple. Then, there was a memorable moment which involved Tim Southee. Just a reminder, its 'Southee the batsman' and not the bowler. What was the moment? Let's find out.
Tim Southee equals Sachin Tendulkar's record of sixes in the game's longest format
Yes, that's absolutely correct. Believe it or not, but the New Zealand fast bowler found a new mention in history books as he equalled the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar in the list of six-hitting in Test match cricket.
Southee's big one against off-spinner Dhanajaya de Silva helped him get to this record. The Little Master has 69 maximums in 329 innings while all it has taken the Kiwi pacer is a mere 89 innings to achieve this feat. Both Tendulkar and Southee are tied at the 17th spot for most sixes in the longest format of the game.
Meanwhile, the tall speedster is just one six away from equalling Younus Khan's record. The former Pakistani batsman has 70 maximums in 213 innings.
Players to have hit the most number of sixes in Test cricket
Tim Southee's former captain and team-mate Brendon McCullum has the record of most sixes in Test match cricket. McCullum has 107 big hits in 176 innings. Other than Baz, former Australian vice-captain and wicket-keeper batsman Adam Gilchrist is also in the list of scoring a century of sixes. Gilly has scored exactly a 100 sixes 137 innings. The three-time World Cup-winning player is followed by other world-class batsmen which include the likes of Chris Gayle, Jacques Kallis and Virender Sehwag with 98, 97 and 91 sixes respectively.
