Vernon Philander struggles to find the ball as video goes viral
Vernon Philander failed to find the ball which was between two wedges of the boundary rope. This hilarious incident had left the commentators in splits
Vernon Philander had a tiring day at the office as he had to bowl for nearly two whole days in the first of the three-match Test series between India and South Africa at Vizag. However, he had a day to forget on the second day of the contest due to a bizarre incident while he was fielding.
Vernon Philander tries to find the ball
Fielding in Test match cricket is exhausting as there are no stipulated number of overs and if the batting team is performing exceptionally well then all the bowling team can do is hope the opposition captain to declare the innings as soon as possible and it seems that even Vernon Philander was very tired after bowling so many overs and spending a lot of time on the field.
It happened in the 129th over of the Indian innings when Ravindra Jadeja and Wriddhiman Saha were batting. Vernon Philander was struggling to find the ball which had left the commentators in splits. Philander thought that the ball would be under the pitch covers which were kept behind the boundary rope but to no avail. He continued to find the ball as the play was halted for some time. His team-mates also lent him a helping hand but that did not help either. However, the television cameras did the job for the Proteas as it revealed that the ball was between two wedges of the boundary rope. It seems that Aiden Markram might have seen taken a good look at the television cameras as he ran towards the boundary, found out and collected the ball. He then threw it back to either a fielder, bowler or the wicket-keeper before returning back to his fielding position. At the same time, Markram was also seen turning back and smiling at Philander.
The video of this funny incident was posted on social media as well. Watch the video here.
Team India's run-fest at Vizag
Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal laid a solid foundation for India. The 'Hitman' who is making his comeback to Test cricket silenced his critics as he scored his fourth Test century. He scored a brilliant 244-ball 176. Meanwhile, Mayank Agarwal notched up his maiden double ton in Test cricket ( 215 off 371 deliveries). The opening pair of Rohit and Mayank added 317 runs. Virat Kohli failed to capitalise as he could only manage a 40-ball 20 at a strike rate of 50. Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 30 as India declared their innings at 502/7.
The visitors in their first innings were reduced to 39/3 with opener Dean Elgar batting at 27 and Temba Bavuma batting at 2 at the end of the day's play.
