The heartbreak of 2007 World Cup
India led by Rahul Dravid, were touted as one of the favourites to win the 2007 World Cup. However, their campaign went haywire after they were stunned by the then minnows in the opening encounter. India then defeated Bermuda comprehensively. But, in order to advance to the next stage, they had to win their final group game against Sri Lanka. Bowling first, India restricted Sri Lanka to 254/6. In reply, Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed early as Virender Sehwag (48) and Rahul Dravid (60) kept India in the hunt. But, there were no major contributions from others as India were bundled out for 148 and their World Cup hopes went up in fumes.
Everything was sorted as India went on to beat arch-rivals Pakistan in the inaugural edition of the ICC World T20 a few months later and Sehwag was a part of the squad. India got their revenge against the island nation in the 2011 edition of the World Cup where they won their second world title as Sachin Tendulkar fulfilled his childhood dream of winning a World Cup medal and being a world champion. Viru was also a member of the triumphant squad.
