The experienced and clinical Lasith Malinga played a key role in Sri Lanka's staggering 20-run World Cup win over England on Friday. The crucial victory keeps Sri Lanka in the race for a semi-final spot. England’s batting line up tumbled upon like dominos and slumped 186-9. Ben Stokes' explosive innings of 82 not out off 89 balls, including seven fours and fours sixes, raised England’s hope but in vain.
A win on Friday would have seen hosts England go to the top of the World Cup points table But instead, their second surprise loss after a 14-run defeat by Pakistan, leaves them in third place, with Sri Lanka now trailing India with just two points in fifth place.
Sri Lanka posted a below-par target of 233, they needed a miracle bowling performance to defend that total against England, the team with a batting line up that goes deep.
Known to deliver well in pressure situations, the toe-crushing pacer, Lasith Malinga recorded figures of 4-43 and took the Lankan Lions to victory. Malinga was supported by off-spinner Dhananjaya de Silva’s three wickets in quick succession. The damage was more than enough to snatch a victory against England. The win was special as it came at Headingley -- the ground where they sealed their first Test series win in England five years ago.
The crowd went ballistic as Malinga, took 4 crucial wickets. Renowned for his unorthodox 'slingshot' action Malinga’s first prey was Jonny Bairstow, who got out LBW for a golden duck. Next in line was James Vince, who was replacing the injured Jason Roy. He got out when an edged drive off Malinga was caught by Mendis at slip. Joe Root was caught behind down the legside off Malinga, who then bowled his famous toe-crushing yorker to have dangerman Jos Buttler LBW.
Stokes got a breather when he was dropped by Mendis, fielding at deep square leg. If Mendis took the catch, Malinga would have walked in the dressing room with a fifer.
Stokes looked in good shape but was not supported by any player on the other end. If India wins today, against Afghanistan, they will surpass England on the points table. Sri Lanka will play their next against South Africa, a team desperately looking for a win.
