Bury F.C. expelled from English Football League, takeover fails
The Football League Bury was expelled from English Football League after they failed to materialize the takeover by a data and analytics firm C&N Sporting Risk.
The English Football League (EFL) expelled Bury F.C., one of the oldest English football clubs on Tuesday. The EFL in a statement said that they were unable to find a new buyer or resolve their financial problems. A few hours before meeting the league requirement deadline C&N Sporting Risk did not abide by its proposed takeover and pulled out of the League One (third tier) side. Bury F.C.was submitted at least three late offers suggest multiple media reports.
Bury's History
Bury F.C. became the first team to be expelled since Maidstone in 1992. They joined the English Football League in 1894 and won the FA Cup (Football Association Challenge Cup) in 1900 and 1903. Before EFL decided to end Bury F.C.'s participation in the league they had suspended five scheduled fixtures for the club this season. The EFL statement mentioned that they have considered all the available options. They also considered the number of late expressions of interest provided to them. After all the deliberation, the EFL decided to unanimously withdraw Bury F.C.'s membership with enormous regret.
The EFL also added that the integrity of the competition paired with the ongoing concerns was an important factor in the decision taken by them. They also said that there will be no further suspensions to the fixture list. EFL also issued a 14-day notice to the fellow third-tier side Bolton Wanderers. Bolton Wanderers has also been going through financial problems and the EFL said that if Bolton Wanderers are unable to resolve their issue, they may face the same outcome as Bury F.C..
Steve Dale, the owner of Bury F.C. had informed the EFL last week about the offer acceptance from C&N Sporting Risk. This is a company owned by Rory Campbell, son of Alastair Campbell who was the ex-communications chief for then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Henry Newman. C&N Sporting Risk is a data and analytics firm and they withdrew their support to Bury F.C. after due diligence.
Message from the Executive Chairperson
The EFL Executive Chairperson, Debbie Jevans, said with great enormous despair that August 27 was one of the darkest days in League’s history. She added that the EFL has always worked continuously and tirelessly to avoid such an outcome. This situation was forced upon them and they took the decision with a very heavy heart. Jevans also explained the events that led to this decision. The repeated missed deadline, not receiving the evidence they required regarding the financial commitments, suspension of five League fixtures and a possible takeover not materializing were the reasons for the suspension of Bury F.C.
