The 2019-20 Carabao Cup season is about to begin. Manchester City, who successfully defended their title last year, will hope to repeat their performance this season. 2018-19 Carabao Cup runner-up, Chelsea, will also look to progress after missing out on the title to Man City. Here is a brief overview of the previous season. Expect the likes of City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United to go all out in the Carabao Cup.
Carabao Cup 2018-19: Manchester City and Chelsea final recap
Pep Guardiola’s side entered the final against Chelsea as clear favourites to lift the trophy and defend their title. The 2018-19 Carabao Cup final was played at Wembley Stadium with an attendance of 81,775. Jonathan Moss was the match referee on this occasion. The teams were level at the end of the first 90 minutes, which took the game to extra time.
That one time when Kepa Arizzabalaga turned manager in the Carabao Cup
The final was overshadowed by an incident that occurred towards the end of extra time. Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arizzabalaga defied coach Maurizio Sarri’s orders as the former refused to come off the pitch. Sarri did not want to risk the Spanish youngster, who looked to be injured as he got ready to send in Argentina goalkeeper Willy Caballero as his replacement. An irate Sarri nearly stormed into the tunnel post the incident. The Italian was later held back by Chelsea defender Antonio Rüdiger from confronting Arrizabalaga.
The match ultimately went to penalties. Chelsea got off to a bad start as Jorginho saw his opening penalty saved by City goalkeeper Ederson. Arizzabalaga almost turned saviour for Chelsea as he denied winger Leroy Sane a goal. But after David Luiz's miss during the shootout, City's Raheem Sterling scored to win the shootout 4–3 as Guardiola & Co. successfully defended the Carabao Cup title.
