Parity lasted even after 120 minutes of action in the Champions League final in 2008. Frank Lampard did not depart from Moscow with happy feelings, as Chelsea ended on the losing side in the final. No John Terry and no Ashley Cole meant that the Blues had to be wary of a resurgent United side. Their absence, however, did not show in the opening minutes. Chelsea raced to a two-goal lead in the fixture. Wayne Rooney, however, came to the fore, scoring two penalties in the space of 11 minutes to bring United back in the game. Javier Chicharito Hernandez netted the final goal in the game, heading in a cross from Ryan Giggs.

Three days after the defeat at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea once again welcomed Manchester United in the Round of 16 in the League Cup. In what would go down as one of the greatest fixtures to have been played in the tournament's history, Chelsea emerged winners this time around. Goals from David Luiz, Eden Hazard, Daniel Sturridge, Gary Cahill and Ramires meant that Roberto di Matteo got one over his Premier League rivals on the night.

Jose Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge for the first time as manager of their rivals, United. If the Portuguese expected a pleasant return, it turned out to be the exact opposite. The Blues netted four goals in the game and also kept a clean sheet, as Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge turned out to be a bitter one this time around.
