A Zenit tifo was unveiled by fans of the Russian side before the start of the game. The tifo featured a bearded guitarist wearing Zenit colours. A bear and a wolf flanked the guitarist in the Zenit tifo, with the Zenit fans also unveiling a mesmerizing background behind the guitarist and his furry friends. Underneath the Zenit tifo, a banner read "Zenit in my soul, Russia in my heart". If the Zenit tifo was meant to be menacing and inspire fear in their opponents for the evening, RB Leipzig, Zenit Saint Petersburg clearly needed more than a tifo to register a win against Julien Nagelsmann's side.

RB Leipzig made the trip to the Gazprom Arena for their Champions League encounter having scored a total of 14 goals in their last two games. A 6-1 win over VFL Wolfsburg followed by an 8-0 demolition of FSV Mainz meant that the Zenit vs Leipzig game was bound to have goals. However, Timo Werner, who scored five goals and laid down five assists in those games started on the bench for the visitors, with Christopher Nkunku starting in place of the German. Diego Demme thundered in spectacular effort in the additional minutes of the first half to give Leipzig the lead. Timo Werner then came on for Nkunku in the second half and within moments of his arrival, the German striker combined with Emil Forsberg, who then laid on the assist for Marcel Sabitzer to hammer in Leipzig's second and final goal of the night.
Dayot Upamecano made more recoveries (12) and more clearances (4) than any other RB Leipzig player against Zenit.
