New plans have been drafted for the inaugural version of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup. After a vote of the governing council at its quarterly meeting, multiple media reports have reported that China is set to be confirmed as the host for the FIFA Club World Cup in 2021. The quadrennial event has been given the backing of UEFA after initial opposition from European authorities.

The tournament was earlier slated to host 12 teams from Europe. UEFA, however, are reportedly happy to supply a third of the 24-team tournament. The revamped edition of the FIFA Club World Cup is set to replace the existing seven-team tournament in place. Currently, the Club World Cup traditionally takes place every December between the winners of the top six club competitions in Europe and the national champions of the host nation.

Football News: Teams rumoured to participate

Champions League winners Liverpool would be among the first teams from Europe to take part in the competition. Under the plans for the revamped Club World Cup, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid would also have confirmed slots in the tournament. These teams will then be joined by the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League tournaments from the ongoing season and the next. However, one report claims that there could be a restriction on the number of teams that can participate in the Club World Cup from a single nation. This would, in turn, prevent a single domestic league from dominating the tournament.

Once confirmed, the revamped FIFA Club World Cup will be held in June and July 2021. This will mean that the Club World Cup would replace the now-scrapped Confederations Cup. The penultimate editions of the Club World Cup in its current format will take place in Qatar, the host of the 2022 Fifa World Cup.
