Bundesliga: Eintracht Frankfurt captain banned after barging into opposition manager

Eintracht Frankfurt captain David Abraham has been handed a seven-week ban which will last until December 29, 2019 and will have to pay a fine of £21,000 for his actions during a recent Bundesliga match. The captain was sent off in their clash against SC Freiburg on Sunday, November 10, 2019, when Abraham barged into Freiburg’s manager Christian Streich.

Freiburg hosted Frankfurt, with the visitors already down to 10 men. Gelson Fernandes had been sent off earlier in the first-half stoppage time. Freiburg were leading 1-0 when the ball went out of play in the injury time. Streich let the ball go by while Abraham was trying to recover it. The captain then bundled the opponent coach over with a shoulder as he ran past him. Upset Freiburg players and staff were furious over Abraham’s reaction and then chased the defender on to the field, leading to a situation of chaos.

Frankfurt will appeal against the decision

It is now confirmed that Abraham will not play in the Bundesliga again this year after being held guilty by the German Football Association (DFB) for his assault against the manager. Frankfurt have announced that they will appeal against their captain’s suspension. The ban comes into force from November 10 and lasts till December 29, 2019.

However, it doesn't apply to the Europa League, meaning that he will be available to play against Arsenal. After having a look at the clash with VAR, match referee Felix Brych also sent off Freiburg player Vincenzo Grifo, who had reacted from his position on the substitute’s bench. He will also face a three-match ban for targeting Abraham during the scuffle.
