Euro 2020 qualifiers: Sweden vs Spain: player ratings and review
Euro 2020 qualifiers: Spain qualify to the Euro 2020 after a 1-1 draw with Sweden sawy from home. Rodrigo scored at the death as De Gea got himself injured.
Spain confirmed their qualification to Euro 2020 with a draw against Sweden on October 16, 2019. Sweden hosted La Roja in the Friends Arena, Solna, in a game where they frustrated the visitors for much of the game. The Group F tie concluded with Spain keeping their 5-point lead over second-placed Sweden with both having two games in hand. Here we look at the player ratings from the game.
As it happened
Spain made six changes to their side after their draw against Norway on Sunday with Sergio Ramos missing out, serving a suspension. Villarreal's Gerard Moreno was handed his international debut after his blistering start to the season. Sweden, on the other hand, made just a single change as Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof coming into the line-up for the crunch game.
Spain saw a lot of the ball in the game, having 74 percent possession but lacked much incisiveness throughout. It was the home team who opened the scoring after Marcus Berg scored in the 50th minute. David de Gea made an exquisite double save but couldn't deny the striker from scoring from the rebound. Spain's relentless attack finally paid off when Rodrigo, came off the bench to equalise right at the death, which was enough to see Spain qualify for the tournament next year. The big talking point, however, was when De Gea suffered an abductor injury and had to be taken out in the second half.
