LaLiga: Sergio Ramos confirms fine from Spanish tax authorities

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has confirmed that a heavy fine has been levied on him by the Spanish tax authorities. Ramos will, however, appeal the fine.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has confirmed that he has been fined by the Spanish tax authorities. The Spanish centre-back has confirmed that a fine of a reported €1m fine has been levied on him over alleged image rights irregularities. The Real Madrid mainstay also confirmed that he intends to appeal the fine for the transgressions that is said to have taken place between 2012 and 2014.

According to reports in Spain, Ramos has been accused of transferring revenue to his own company, Sermos 32 SL, which is based in Spain, in order to pay an inferior tax amount. The Spanish international, however, claims that during the 2012-2014 period, he was intimated that the settlement amount would be far less than the current amount of €1m. Sergio Ramos joins the raft of players to be found guilty by the Spanish authorities after Barcelona's Lionel Messi and former Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo were found guilty of tax evasion.

Both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were handed prison sentences on account of being found guilty. However, neither served a prison sentence after agreeing to settle with the Spanish authorities. Ramos also noted that while the cases against the two were criminal, his transgression was simply an administrative offence, which he duly rectified by paying the whole amount of the fine.

All's not lost

Ramos claims that he has been unfairly penalised due to a change in the law. Ramos has stated that he will exercise his right to appeal. He further went on to say that while he disagrees with the change of criteria of the Tax Agency, he has fully reimbursed the payments despite being made of a lesser amount to be paid earlier.
