Since its introduction to the game of football, Video Assistant Referee or VAR has been the centre of criticism and praise, both equally. There no denying the fact that in crucial moments, when the on-field or line referee misses out on an error or foul, VAR always comes to the rescue of the team nearing a disadvantage in the game. However, the rule has also been criticised severely for 'killing the essence of football.' After being introduced to the Premier League recently, Liverpool star midfielder James Milner joined the debacle as he criticized VAR by saying that it was 'ruining the atmosphere' of football.
"We still have debates about it," says Milner
James Milner, who plays for Liverpool - the table-toppers this season, said that the technology was ruining the essence of football and several players are against its use. Milner said, "Look at goal-line technology, it is absolutely clean. Black and white. However, it is completely different when it comes to VAR. It is very difficult to use the technology when you have got different opinions on the decisions and technology is ruining the atmosphere. It is so confusing. You score, the crowd erupts and suddenly there is VAR. You wait to confirm if it is a goal or not." "The game of football is a game of error and mistakes by the players and official as well. The officials have a very tough job and VAR might be making their lives easier but not at the cost of the flow of the game. I would completely back VAR if it took away the controversy but we are still having debates about it and I feel several players feel the same about the technology," Milner added.
Liverpool lead the title race
Liverpool have been blazing this season so far as they have continued their run of remaining unbeaten in 45 matches. The Reds recently beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 courtesy of Mohammad Salah's penalty and Henderson's equalizing header. Liverpool currently enjoy the top spot in the Premier League rankings with 28 points, 6 points clear off reigning champions Manchester City. Klopp's men will next face the Gunners on October 31 in the Carabao Cup.
