Leroy Sane then levelled for City when he struck a shot and beat Loris Karius at his first post. However, Liverpool then turned on in style. Firmino bullied John Stones to latch on to a ball from Chamberlain and scoop it past Ederson to restore Liverpool's lead. Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah then scored to end City's unbeaten run in the league that season.

The second leg of the aforementioned Champions League quarter-final was an interesting one. Gabriel Jesus scored early in the game to spark some hope of a Manchester City comeback. However, when Ederson appeared to shove Sadio Mane, City players paused for a second to check if the referee was going to award a penalty. Salah caught the City defence unawares to dink the ball into City's goal and net Liverpool's equaliser. Firmino then slipped a cool finish past Ederson to give Liverpool a 5-1 aggregate win in the quarter-final against City.
