North Korea emerged victorious in the second edition of the Intercontinental Cup football tournament defeating Tajikistan by a single goal in the final in Ahmadabad on Friday.

The Korean team attained the lead in the 71st minute through Pak Hyon Il, who netted a goal just after coming on as a substitute at the EKA Arena by TransStadia. A dream finish for both the finalists as they were the two lowest-ranked teams of the four-nation tournament, the other participants being hosts India and Syria.

At half time, the score was tied nil-nil with North Korea coming closest to scoring in the 20th minute through Jong Il Gwan.

Having defeated hosts India (world no. 101) and Syria (85) in the league stage to seal their places in the final, both Tajikistan (120) and North Korea (122) entered the game on a confident note.

In form, North Korea held a slight advantage as they beat Tajikistan 1-0 in the league stages. And they repeated it in final also to emerge victorious The champions Were awarded USD 50000 while the runners-up received USD 25000.

The Blue Tigers took to Twitter to congratulate North Korea on winning the Intercontinental Cup.

India had a disappointing tournament as they ended their campaign winless, with their best result being a draw against Syria. Earlier, Indian skipper Sunil Chhetri took to Twitter to share his thoughts about the tournament. He said that even though the Indian team couldn’t win a game, they are taking a lot away from the Intercontinental Cup. He went on to say that the team has mistakes to mend but also gained positives that the team will capitalise on and the support that the team got. He then pleaded the fans to invest hope in the Indian side as this team is going to fight for India.
