The use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the Premier League has been met with mixed reactions over the course of the 2019-20 season. Matchweek 11 witnessed some questionable decisions made with the use of VAR in the Liverpool vs Aston Villa match and the Tottenham Hotspur and Everton clash on Sunday too. Former Tottenham and Barcelona striker Gary Lineker took to Twitter to express his anguish at the use of VAR in the English top-flight this season.

Premier League: Gary Lineker calls to put an end of VAR in the English top-flight
Sick of VAR. In its present state it is killing the game. It’s being used to referee the game rather than something in the background to correct the absolute howler. Was always going to take time to settle down but they couldn’t be getting it more wrong than they currently are.

Lineker, who scored 67 goals for Spurs in 105 appearances, claimed that VAR officials have not been efficient in their decision making despite the amount of time they've taken to adapt to the pace of the Premier League. Roberto Firmino's offside decision and the red card to Heung Min Son were the two controversial decisions during Gameweek 11. Will the controversial VAR be around next season in the English top-flight or will we go back to human-error filled match referees?
