Pep Guardiola enjoyed a satisfactory victory against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium to see Manchester City cut down Liverpool's lead over the champions to just three points. Three goals in 24 second-half minutes secured the victory for Pep Guardiola's men. City's three goals during the win mean that 12 goals have been scored in the first two games of the weekend after Leicester City hammered Southampton in a 9-0 win on Friday night.

Manchester City have already dropped five points at home so far, but the Citizens stepped up their game a notch to register their ninth successive home win against Aston Villa. After a tightly-contested first half, three goals in 24 minutes in the second half meant that City have equalled their longest top-flight home winning streak against a single opponent. The win propels City into second on the Premier League table.

There was a lack of intensity in the first half, as Aston Villa did really well to keep City's attackers at bay. Gabriel Jesus and David Silva were guilty of missing opportunities in the first half as Tyrone Mings stood tall in the Villa defence. The second half saw City come out in full force, as Raheem Sterling netted City's first goal of the game. Sterling slipped the ball through the legs of Tom Heaton to put City 1-0 up. 19 minutes later, Kevin De Bruyne netted a somewhat controversial goal to put some more distance between them and their visitors.

Makeshift centre-back Fernandinho was sent off for the hosts after receiving a second yellow on 87 minutes. At one point, City had just nine players on the pitch, as John Stones momentarily made his way to the sidelines after a minor injury. Ilkay Gundogan, who dictated City's play throughout the game netted City's third of the night, as he did extremely well to keep the ball down and strike a half volley into the net. Here are the player ratings from the game.
