A World Cup, Euro Championship and a Champions League is essentially the holy trinity of a football player's career. Few have gone on to win all the three. Spain's all-time leading goalscorer David Villa, however, is one of the few.
After 19 years as a professional, I have decided to retire from playing football at the end of this season. Thank you to all the teams, coaches and teammates that have allowed me to enjoy this dreamed career. Thank you to my family, that has always been there to support me. pic.twitter.com/E82vb3tNwT

After an illustrious career spanning 19 years, the former Barcelona striker decided to call time on his playing career after his stint with Japanese side Vissel Kobe. Not many players can play second fiddle to arguably the greatest player to don a Barcelona shirt, Lionel Messi. David Villa, however, played that role to perfection. Despite seeing his Valencia teammates Juan Mata and David Silva move to England, Villa could do little to resist when Barcelona came calling for him. With a front three of Pedro, Lionel Messi and David Villa, Barcelona would taste considerable success both, domestically as well as Europe. It is natural, therefore, that Twitter was sent into overdrive when David Villa announced his retirement.
David Villa's retirement: Twitter reactions
A memorable World Cup and Euro run partnering Fernando Torres up top for Spain meant that David Villa created numerous memories for Spanish football fans. His took to Twitter to express their support when Villa hung up his boots. A number of fans also posted tweets saying that David Villa was the reason they started to follow the exploits of the Spanish national team.
One of my favourite striker announced his retirement, he is the only reason of supporting @SeFutbol since Euro Cup 2008. What a career he had, he won almost every possible trophy to win.
