IAAF World Athletics Championships Highlights: Medal winners on Day 3
IAAF World Athletics Championships is underway and world-class athletes are competing in the track and field events. Read on to know more about the winners
The IAAF World Athletics Championships is underway and Day 3 wrapped up with some new world champions procuring the titles. The biennial event is the most prestigious sport apart from the Olympics. With men’s qualifiers and finals taking place simultaneously, the audience in Khalifa International is on the edge of their seats witnessing the grand events. Here is what happened in day 3 of IAAF’s World Athletics Championship.
Men’s 200m Heats
In 200m heats, the best time recorded was of Adam Gemili (20.06s). Despite new 100m world champion Christian Coleman withdrawing from the 200m qualifiers for unknown reasons, other star athletes with timings under the 20.20s mark shined, in particular, Andre De Grasse-Canada, Zhenye Xie-China, Alex Quinonez-Ecuador, Kyle Greaux-Trinidad & Tobago. Day 4 will witness the semi-finals. On Day 5 the final winners will be known.
Women’s Pole Vault finals
A total of 17 finalists qualified for pole vault women’s finals which was a first in pole vault global history. Anzhelika Sidrova, a neutral athlete who originally is from Russia clinched the gold clearing the 4.95m height in the final round. She defeated USA’s Sandi Morris who won silver. Katerina Stefanidi of Greece had to settle down for a Bronze.
Women’s 100m Finals
In women’s 100 m Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce of Jamaica added to her list of global titles by clinching another gold in the 17th edition of World Athletics Championships. Post the victory the 32-year-old sprinter was seen celebrating with her toddler son Zion alongside the race tracks. This new time recorded is the fourth fastest in the history of World Athletics Championships. Dina Asher-Smith who hails from Great Britain came second with a record time of 10.83s. And Marie Josee Ta Lou of Ivory Coast clinched the third place clocking 10.90s.
Men's Triple Jump
In the men’s triple jump event, the USA dominated as both first and second place was bagged by the natives. In men’s triple jump final round Christian Taylor of the USA won gold. The silver medal was won by Will Claye of the USA. Hugues Fabrice Zango, a Burundi national made it to the medal tally with a bronze in Triple Jump
Mixed 4x400m Relay
The first gender mix event, the 4x400m relay had its maiden competition format in Doha in and saw the USA as the world champions with the record setting 3:09:34s time. Followed by Jamaicans who recorded 3:11.78s time and bagged a silver for their country. The third place was secured by Bahrain with a close edge to the silver medallists with the timing of 3:11.82s. The event saw some cutting edge sprinters from both the gender.
Women’s 20km Walking Race
The Chinese contingent dominated as all the three winners in the 20km walking race were from the country. Hong Liu won the gold medal. Shenjie Qieyang won the silver. Liujing Yang won the bronze medal.
