Men's Shot Put IAAF World Athletics Championships: Schedule and Preview
Taking a look at the current records for men’s shot put, even throwing beyond 22 metres might not earn you a gold medal in the IAAF World Championships. To give you a context for the unparalleled level of shot putting, only 16 world titles have been won by throws over the 22 metres mark. Nine men in the competition have a personal best beyond that mark. With eight of 21 men in the world all-time list, there is a chance for some big throws.
Tom Walsh, two-time world indoor champion, has performed stunningly this past month. He won in Paris with a season-best of 22.4 metres and retained his Diamond league men's shot put title in Brussels. Walsh has a good record with big tournaments and has previously won four gold at World Men’s Shot Put Championships. Walsh’s pre-championship loss was with a respectable 21.90 metres at the Chorzow competition.
Ryan Crouser has also been in terrific form opening his outdoor campaign with world-leading personal best of 22.74 metres. It is the longest throw since 1990. Except for the 21.11 metres win at Drake Relays, all of Crouser’s throws were beyond 22 metres this year.
After Stanford’s IAAF Diamond League record of 22.61 metres, Darlan Romani joined Walsh and Crouser in the world all-time top 10. Romani beat Walsh and Crouser in last year’s IAAF Continental Cup. Konrad Bukowiecki, Darrell Hill, Bob Bertemes, Tomas Stanek, Jacko Gill and Chukwu Enekwechi are other contenders you need to look out for.
