NBA: Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki gets street named after him

NBA: A street passing near the American Airlines Center will now bear the name of Dirk Nowitzki following his contribution to the Dallas team for 21 years.

Having spent his entire career with Dallas Mavericks, Dirk Nowitzki not only made a name for himself but also found a special place in the hearts of Dallas fans. American Airlines Center is the place where the tall German spent his 21-year career and he has been duly rewarded for his contribution to the city.

Dallas Mavericks: Dirk Nowitzki speaks about honour given to him 

A street passing near the stadium will now bear the name of the Dallas Mavericks legend. The idea of changing the name was brought up by Mayor Pro Tem Adam Medrano and it was in late September when City Council members unanimously voted to change the name of Olive Street between Victory Avenue and North Field Street.

Speaking after the christening for Nowitzki Way, the German said that this honour is a little bit bigger than basketball. He said that this honour was about his relationship with this city and with the community. He also said that this is for his family, and all he wanted was his family name to be represented.

Mavericks fans, players and staff joined city officials at the event. Nowitzki has helped the Mavericks clinch that championship with a performance that earned him the title of Finals MVP.

Dirk Nowitzki, who retired after last season, is a 14-time All-Star and the highest-scoring foreign-born player in NBA history.  He was named NBA MVP in 2007 and will love by Dallas fans for helping the team win its only championship in 2011 when he was NBA Finals MVP.

Current Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle also praised the german for his contribution. Speaking during the event he said that for Dirk, fame was something he was never interested in. He even called Nowitzki a loving son, dedicated husband, doting father, community leader and a top-tier, all-time great NBA champion.

Nowitzki heaped praise on the Mavericks coach as well thanked owner Mark Cuban for being in his corner, even when he wasn’t performing very well. He said that he had so much support from the fans and the community and it felt like they wanted him to succeed.
