NBA legend Larry Bird flies to watch the first ever NBA game in India

NBA legend and former Boston Celtics star, Larry Bird was seen courtside of the first-ever NBA match in India between the Sacramento Kings and Indiana Pacers

As the much anticipated NBA game in India between Sacramento Kings and Indiana Pacers is underway, basketball icon and former Boston Celtics star Larry Bird flew in to witness the first NBA match in India live. The 12 time NBA all-star and 3 time MVP was seen courtside enjoying the match between Kings and Pacers at the NSCI Dome in Mumbai. 

Larry, 'The Legend' flies in to watch first NBA games in India

Larry Bird, also nicknamed as 'Larry Legend' played all 13 seasons with Boston Celtics and achieved numerous feats during his stint. Bird scored around 21,800 points during his entire career and also went on to become the NBA Champion three times. Unfortunately, Bird's career was cut short due to several injuries. He announced his retirement on August 18, 1992, due to debilitating back problems. Boston Celtics retired jersey no 33 in the honour of Bird after his retirement. Larry Bird is also famously known for his on-court rivalry with Lakers' Magic Johnson.  Bird also served as President of Basketball Operations for the Indiana Pacers in the NBA. NBA legends Jason Williams, Detlef Schrempf and Dikembe Mutombo were also present courtside to witness the first NBA game in India.

Star-studded NBA games in India

As the first NBA games in India commences, several celebrities were seen at the courtside of the game between Sacramento Kings and Indiana Pacers. From Bollywood, Malaika Arora, John Abraham, Rahul Bose and Sonam Kapoor and her husband Anand Ahuja were seen at the game. India's richest man Mukesh Ambani and his wife Neeta Ambani were also present with the latter presenting the ceremonial ''Match Ball'' to NBA officials. YouTube sensation Bhuvan Bam was also invited to sing the Indian National Anthem before the game began. The second game between Indiana Pacers and Sacramento Kings will be played on October 5.
