The NBA season kicked off with a bang as a total of 22 teams featured on Thursday, October 24 for an action-packed mid-week for NBA fans around the world. Here is a look at all the fixtures that took place on Thursday.
Brooklyn Nets vs Minnesota Timberwolves
Kyrie Irving made his much-awaited debut for the Brooklyn Nets at the Barclays Center. Much was expected of the six-time All-Star and the former Celtics star did not disappoint. Irving was all around the court as he put in a dominant display, racking up 50 points during his debut for the Nets. In doing so, Irving also went on to set the record for most points scored in an NBA debut. His 50-point display was just the seventh 50-point display in Nets' history.
Philadelphia 76ers vs Boston Celtics
Ben Simmons dominated proceedings to make sure that the Philadelphia 76ers opened their NBA season with a victory. The 76ers romped to a 107-93 win over the Boston Celtics. 24 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists summed up Simmons' dominance during the win over the Celtics. Al Horford, who faced his former team during the game, finished the game with 16 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds.
San Antonio Spurs Vs New York Knicks
It was an unfortunate day for the Knicks as they succumbed to a 120-111 defeat against the San Antonio Spurs. R.J. Barrett made his debut on the day and did not disappoint as the rookie racked up 21 points, five rebounds and two assists. Despite holding a lead in the third quarter, the Knicks failed to hold on to their lead as the Spurs mounted a late resurgence to secure a win.
Portland Trail Blazers vs Denver Nuggets
A rematch of last season's Western Conference finals promised to be an exciting contest and it did not disappoint. The Blazers, like the Knicks, held a lead going into the third quarter. However, Nikola Jokic's late show stole victory from the jaws of defeat for the Nuggets. The game ended 108-100.
Indiana Pacers vs Detroit Pistons
Andre Drummond was a force to reckon with during the Pistons win over the Indiana Pacers. 32 points on 12-18 shooting, 23 rebounds, four blocks and three steals summed up Drummonds' dominant display. Drummonds was so good during the win against the Pacers that the absence of six-time NBA All-Star Blake Griffin was hardly felt by the Pistons.
