Tonga Rugby star Fifita says Bali jail time taught him 'big lesson'
David Fifita says he learned 'big lesson' from Bali jail time after returning to Australia. NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg asked players to be careful.
Tonga international rugby league footballer David Fifita who was in jail for being involved in a nightclub fight said the media on November 12 that he has learned a "big lesson" after spending time in a Bali jail. Fifita was arrested after a reported incident with a security guard last week. The teenager was released and has now returned to Australia after which he spoke to the media. He is due to explain his version of events to an NRL Integrity Unit later on. Fifita also thanked those who played a part in getting him back home.
The 19-year-old said the media that there has been a lot going on behind the scenes and he is really grateful for that. He added that he has learned a big lesson from what he has been through over the past few days.
NRL chief executive warns players to be cautious off the field
Responding to Fifita's case, NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg warned players to be more responsible off the field. Once they are off the tracks, it is very likely that they will put their careers in danger. Greenberg said Tuesday that it's a timely reminder that players need to be acutely aware of the position they put themselves in. He added that he doesn't want to see players miss games but if they continue to make poor decisions then they'll suffer the consequences. Players know the decisions they make are important, he said. He warned the other players that he would not like another off-season of players doing the wrong thing. He is frustrated now because there are so many good stories to be told. The players do a lot of good outside the field and he would like to talk of that and not what spoilt their image, he said.
Speaking on Fifita, he said the media that he was not pleased of the fact that he is home because it would've been a harrowing experience. He added that he will wait for the report from the Integrity Unit before deciding if any action is necessary.
