Boris Becker's bankruptcy extended till 2031, undisclosed assets found

The youngest Wimbledon champion of all-time Boris Becker has had his bankruptcy restrictions extended till 2031. This development took place after authorities discovered Becker's undisclosed assets worth 4.5 million pounds. He was initially declared bankrupt in 2017.

Bankruptcy restrictions increased by 12 years

In 2017, Becker was declared bankrupt by the court after he failed to pay back money to the tune of a reported £10.5 million pounds to private bank Arbuthnot Latham & Co. Becker was originally only supposed to serve a year as bankrupt. Bankruptcy restrictions include the obligation to inform creditors about one's bankruptcy if more than £500 are being borrowed. A bankrupt person can also not be a company's director and has to get a permit from a court before running a company.

Authorities have revealed that Becker had undisclosed assets worth £4.5 million during the bankruptcy declaration proceedings and in order to punish Becker severely and to 'safeguard his creditors', Becker's bankruptcy restrictions have been incremented by 12 years. Becker will now remain bankrupt from October 17, 2019 to October 16, 2031. 

Fall from grace

Becker, a six-time Grand Slam winner, has had a turbulent past. After incurring costs of a divorce and some failed businesses, Becker's assets reportedly fell from £35 million to £540 thousand. Becker allegedly owed creditors a sum of £54 million. Becker's lawyers even tried claiming diplomatic immunity, only for their claims to be refuted by the foreign minister of Central African Republic. These claims delayed an impending auction of Becker's collectables to pay off his debtors.

Earlier this year, the auction took place and raised money to the tune of £680 thousand. Among the memorabilia and collectables auctioned was Becker's 1989 US Open Trophy which attracted a bid of £150 thousand. His Olympic certificate was also put up for the auction along with a watch he was gifted by Novak Djokovic.
