Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer in the same group for ATP London Finals

The ATP World Tour Finals, which starts in London on Sunday, will have Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer drawn in the same group. The six-time ATP winner Federer and five-time winner Djokovic will compete in Group Borg alongside Matteo Berrettini and Dominic Thiem. The other group, Group Agassi consists of newly-crowned World No.1 Rafael Nadal alongside Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Nadal, who had pulled out of last week’s Paris Masters, announced on Tuesday that he plans to compete in London. The Spaniard stated that an MRI scan had revealed an abdominal injury, which had forced him to withdraw from the semi-finals in Paris. Despite withdrawing from the Paris tournament, Nadal overtook Djokovic at the top of the rankings this week.

However, if Nadal does not play or fails to win a round-robin match at the ATP finals, he will lose the top spot. If Nadal fails to win and Djokovic wins two group stage matches and reaches the finals of the tournament, the latter will end the year as World No.1.

Federer’s ATP World Tour Finals record

Roger Federer has the most ATP titles in history, winning it six times in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2011. He also has won the most matches in the tournament with 57 wins. This year’s participation will be his 17th career appearance. The ATP finals, held in London since 2009, features the year’s eight top players in the season-ending championship. The participants play three robin-round matches, with the two top players from each group moving to the semi-finals.

Doubles team

Apart from the singles event, eight teams qualified for the doubles event. The teams set to participate are Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah, Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies, Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo, Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau, Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus, Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek and Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut. The Bryan brothers, who have won the event four times, will not be participating this year.
