Roger Federer has mixed feelings over Andy Murray's European Open win

Roger Federer has expressed his delight for compatriot Andy Murray after the latter made an incredible return to tennis with a win at the European Open on Sunday, October 20, 2019. Murray edged past long-time rival Stanislas Wawrinka to complete a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory in the final at Antwerp, Belgium. Murray described it as one of the biggest wins of his tennis career as he won his first title after more than two years. Murray had undergone hip surgery and was on rest for an extended period.

Presently, there are no doubts about Murray’s fitness after his success in Antwerp. The 38-year-old Federer revealed his mixed feelings regarding Murray’s win.

Talking to the press after winning his 1500th match, Federer stated that Murray's achievement was great, but he was a little bit torn as it was Wawrinka who was the runner-up. Wawrinka hails from Federer's home country Switzerland and as a result, their relationship continues to be extremely friendly. However, Federer added that it was an excellent way for Murray to come back as he is playing to try and revive his glory days. The Swiss legend remembered the scene in the locker room at the Australian Open on one instance two years ago, where Murray doubted his comeback and made everyone uncertain about his participation.

Andy Murray in the Davis Cup squad

Meanwhile, after Murray’s win, it was announced that he would be representing Great Britain in the Davis Cup finals scheduled to be held next month. The captain of the team, Leon Smith selected Andy Murray alongside his brother Jamie, Dan Evans and Neal Skupski. According to British media reports, Smith said that the team is in a good position with improved strength and depth in their squad. Also, he stated that the fifth player would be named in the next couple of weeks.

Smith praised Evans saying that he is playing some of the best tennis of his career and firmly deserves his place back amongst the world’s top 50 players. He also expressed his delight at Andy Murray's win and said that seeing him compete again is fantastic. Smith signed off stating that Jamie and Skupksi also have been gaining much momentum as a doubles team with impressive performances at the Cincinnati Masters, US Open, Beijing Open and the Shanghai Masters where they made it to the semi-finals.
