World no 4 Russia's Daniil Medvedev crushed against Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-1 in the final of Shanghai Masters on Sunday to lift his second Masters 1000 title
Daniil Medvedev crushed against Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-1 in the final of Shanghai Masters on Sunday to lift his second Masters 1000 title and continue his fine run in the ATP tour. Medvedev took just an hour and 13 minutes to wrap things up and win his fourth title of the season. The Russian, who is currently the World No. 4 in ATP rankings, registered his 9th straight sets victory as he has not dropped a single set since St. Petersburg Open. Medvedev has been in a scintillating form since the American hard court season and has reached six consecutive finals - Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati, US Open, St Petersburg and now, Shanghai.
Medvedev's first win against Zverev
Going head-to-head with Zverev for the fifth time, the pressure was on Medvedev as he had lost all the four encounters between them but he showed great determination and grit to register his first win against Zverev. Medvedev, who has been in a brilliant form, displayed a spectacular show as he won 76 per cent of his first serves and 50 per cent of second ones. The Russian displayed great character as saved four of the five break points he faced and was broken only once in the first set. Zverev, on the other hand, had a very dull outing as he failed to earn points with his first serve, something which has helped him throughout the tour. Zverev won only 67 per cent of his first serves and won only 30 per cent of his second serves.
Medvedev, while speaking to ATP, said that, "Winning the Shanghai Masters is amazing because it is one of the most prestigious Masters on the Tour. In the past 10 years, only three players who managed to win this one, which makes it really special to have my photo in the corridor over the next many years." He also added that everybody wants to see new guys apart from the top 4, so I gave them something new. "I don't celebrate my wins much. I just stay calm, I do my job. Boom, done," he added.
