Adam Gilchrist reveals the Indian bowler who troubled him the most throughout his career

Australian legend Adam Gilchrist opened up about his career on a podcast by a cricket portal. Gilly, as his fans have referred to him, reflected on his illustrious career, which produced 15000 international runs for the Aussies. Gilchrist also mentioned the bowler who he considered his 'nemesis', ahead of his 48th birthday on Thursday.

Harbhajan Singh and Muttiah Muralitharan

Gilchrist reflected on how former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was a 'nemesis' to him throughout his career. He further added that Bhajji and Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan were the bowlers, who troubled him the most through his playing days. The former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman also reflected on how hard it was for the Aussies to win a Test series in India, something they managed to do after 35 years when they won in 2004 under Gilchrist's captaincy.

Gilchrist looked back at the famous Eden Gardens Test of the 2000/01 Border-Gavaskar trophy when Harbhajan Singh took the first Test hat-trick to be ever taken by an Indian bowler. After a hundred in Mumbai, Gilchrist had a terrible match in Kolkata where he became the first Australian batsman to get the dreaded 'king's pair'. After getting out on a duck in the first innings, Gilchrist tried to help the Australians chase India's mammoth 657. Gilchrist was unsuccessful as Bhajji got him out on his first ball and he became a part of Harbhajan's hat-trick. India ended up winning the historic Test match by 171 runs. Harbhajan took 32 wickets in that series. Gilchrist reflected on how their defeat in 2001 changed the Australians' perspective of attacking and made the team focus more on their ability to control the innings.

Recently, Gilchrist and Harbhajan got into a minor controversy when a fan tweeted a video of Harbhajan's 2001 hat-trick. Gilchrist had retweeted the tweet and implied that things would have been different if he had a DRS review like modern players do. An agitated Harbhajan replied on Twitter and called Gilchrist a 'crybaby' and expressed his disappointment in how less the Australian great has changed since his playing days. Bhajji taunted Gilchrist by implying that even if he had not gotten out on the first ball, he would have not survived for long. Harbhajan proceeded to delete the tweet after some time. Keeping Gilchrist's opinion of Harbhajan Singh in mind, it is very ironical that Gilchrist's first and last ball in the IPL got the wicket of Harbhajan Singh in 2013.
