Australia's head coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed that discussions surrounding Steve Smith's batting position for the upcoming Test series against India are ongoing, but no final decision has been made yet. Smith, who typically bats at the number four spot in the Australian Test line-up, was promoted to open following David Warner’s retirement. However, the move has sparked concerns, as Smith’s recent form at the top of the order has been less than convincing.

Australian head coach clears the air on Steve Smith's batting position

With the high-profile Border-Gavaskar Trophy series looming, speculation has been rife about Australia's potential changes to their batting order. According to reports in the media, Travis Head is the frontrunner to take the opening position against India, which would allow Smith to return to his preferred spot at number four.

Addressing these rumours, Andrew McDonald acknowledged that while nothing has been confirmed, Steve Smith's batting role in the line-up is under active consideration. Speaking to SEN, McDonald revealed the internal discussions taking place within the team:

"That's the question on everyone's lips, isn't it? Whilst we've got an eye to it, we haven't made any firm decisions around that one. There’s plenty of speculation around that. But in the background, I'd be lying if I said the conversation wasn't happening," McDonald said, hinting at a potential reshuffle.

McDonald further emphasized the importance of taking a collaborative approach to any changes, with captain Pat Cummins playing a significant role in the decision-making process. “Clearly, Patty Cummins as the captain is a big part of that. Clearly, if we make a shift with Steve Smith, then someone else will have to go to the top.”

McDonald also suggested that any decision regarding Smith's position would likely be influenced by his performance in the domestic Sheffield Shield competition. "We'll unveil everything, and we'll let (NSW coach) Greg Shipperd know what our plans are and then we'll see what he does with his New South Wales side should Steve Smith play Shield cricket," McDonald said.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy series between India and Australia is scheduled to start in November this year. India won the last two BGT series that were held in Australia and the Pat Cummins-led side will be looking to avenge this time around.
