England is prepared to see Ben Stokes play as a batsman only when they defend their 50-over men's World Cup title in India after the test captain turned back his decision to retire from one-day international. The player has been in tremendous trouble due to a left knee injury that stopped him from bowling during the recent Ashes Test series, and he also stated that playing in all three international formats was unsustainable after he recalled his ODI graph in the last 13 months.
3 things to know
- Ben Stokes was suffering with his knee injury for months
- Ben Stokes took a U-turn from ODI retirement recently
- Harry Brook had to be dropped to bring Stokes on board
The 32-year-old had strategized to use this six-month gap until England's next play at the Test cricket, away to India, to take care of his knee issue.
England player is ready to play it all
However, the great player is ready for an all-new role as a specialist batsman as one of the survivors against New Zealand in three home ODIs which is set to take place next month and is also set to double as England's party for a World Cup in India that will happen for over a month from October 5 to November 19.
England national selector Luke Wright after unveiling the squad on Wednesday said, "It was not a difficult case to change his (Stoke's) mind."
"After his body had a lot of rest and was in the right position, he was excited to play. Though he still has time to take proper rest, which he also is doing and his knee is also improving a lot", he added.
He said, "One thing that the team wouldn't be doing is pushing him to bowl till the time he is good to go. It was certainly a crucial part of the decision, being able to play just as a batter and it was a convenient decision for us."
Ben comes at the expense of Harry Brook
It is to be noted, that the return of Ben comes at the expense of Harry brook. The 24-year-old batsman has been a growing star of the country, as he has compiled four hundred in 12 test matches, with attractive strike rates of 98.85 and 137.77 in ODIs and T20s as well.
On this decision, Wright said, "It was a very tough call, but unfortunately in a team of 15 people, someone has to be sacrificed. This time it is him."
