Massive figure in Indian cricket history, MS Dhoni prompts questions about his future in the IPL. As the former CSK captain, suspicions surround his involvement in IPL 2025 even if his influence in IPL 2024 was less. Fans want for information on whether the legendary player will once more grace the cricket ground.

R Ashwin made a huge statement about MS Dhoni’s future for CSK ahead of IPL 2025 auction

Ravichandran Ashwin, an experienced Indian off-spinner, has indicated his interest in the potential retention of MS Dhoni by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as an uncapped player. Dhoni, whose last appearance in international cricket was in 2019, has the potential to be included in this category.

From the first season of the IPL in 2008 until 2021, there was a regulation that permitted retired players who had not participated in international cricket for more than five years to be regarded as uncapped players. As per an ESPNcricinfo report, CSK suggested reintroducing this regulation at a meeting with the IPL governing council and other team owners.

Ashwin extensively examined this subject on his YouTube channel, delving into the ramifications and likely effects of such a decision. R Ashwin said:

"Will Dhoni play as an uncapped player? That's a big question mark. The point is correct. He hasn't played international cricket for many years. He has retired. So, he is an uncapped player. He is not a capped player. Can a player like Dhoni play as an uncapped player? That is another conversation. Obviously, if someone talks about Dhoni, everyone will talk about it,"

For ₹12 crore ahead of the IPL 2022 big auction, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) kept MS Dhoni. Under the rules of past mega auction retentions, Dhoni would have cost CSK merely ₹4 crore if kept as an uncapped player. It is doubtful that this regulation would be resurrected, though, as most teams were against its return.
