CPL to host two Women's T10 matches ahead of the Final in Trinidad

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the government of Trinidad and Tobago along with Cricket West Indies (CWI) will host two invitational T10 matches comprising of top women cricketers from the Caribbean on October 10 and 12. The Brian Lara Cricket Academy Stadium in Trinidad has been designated as the venue. The matches will be played in the lead up to the CPL final, which is scheduled to be held on October 12 in Tarouba. The CPL is the flagship T20 league of West Indies, featuring 6 teams.

‘Sustainable women’s league’ 

The West Indies women’s team does not have any international assignment until the limited-overs series against India in November. According to the CWI, the T10 series was an attempt to explore the possibility of “a sustainable women's league in the future". Batswoman Hayley Mathews expressed her delight at the prospect of the series and called upon the fans to witness the matches.

While viewers in Trinidad and Tobago would be able to watch the live telecast on CNC3, Sportsmax broadcasting would cater to the rest of the Caribbean. Moreover, the matches will be live-streamed on YouTube.

Officials react

The CEO of CWI, Johnny Grave, stated that one of their top priorities was to improve the opportunities for women in cricket.  

He said, "Improving the opportunities for women and girls to get involved in cricket is one of our top strategic priorities and we are delighted that the CPL and government of Trinidad and Tobago have come together with us to ensure that women's cricket gets chance to be involved in the Hero CPL for the first time." 

The COO of CPL, Pete Russell observed that the cricket fans would get to enjoy world-class cricket. He added that the T10 matches showcased the commitment of making the tournament more inclusive. 

“CPL is always looking for ways to innovate and give more chances for fans to enjoy world-class cricket. These T10 matches with the best women’s cricketers from across the Carribean are just the latest example of our tournament pushing to be more inclusive and forward-thinking. We are delighted at providing this chance to players to take part in this event,” he opined.
