Hashim Amla: Surrey Kolpak deal for the former South Africa cricketer

Hashim Amla, who bid adieu to international cricket a couple of months ago, is all set to sign for Surrey on a Kolpak deal. According to reports, the former South African opener has agreed to a sign a two-year contract with the club. There is a possibility of a no-deal Brexit which might close future Kolpak registrations in county cricket. So, the team management at Surrey is trying to wrap the deal before the end of this week and well ahead of this month to make sure there is no hindrance in the deal. According to the sources, the representatives of the 36-year-old batsman also had a talk with the officials at Middlesex and Hampshire.

While Surrey is likely to receive some flak for signing a second Kolpak registration, they have the services of lanky South African pacer Morne Morkel who is a crucial part of their side. But they would argue that they are trying to make up for the loss of their star players who are scheduled to be on international duty.

Rory Burns, Sam Curran, Ollie Pope could all be gone for long periods for the next few seasons, So Amla has been signed to play the role of a senior player which was fulfilled by the former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara during the last few years of his cricketing career.

Hashim Amla's International Career

Hashim Amla represented South Africa at the top level for almost 15 years. He is the only South African to have scored a triple century in Tests. Amla went on to score 9,282 runs in 124 Tests for South Africa at an average of 46.41. He also represented the Proteas in 181 ODIs and scored 8,113 at an impressive average of 49.46.

Amla had announced his retirement in August after a miserable run for his country in the recently concluded ICC World Cup 2019. Surrey will definitely benefit when the South African legend comes on board with them after signing a 2-year Kolpak deal.
