‘Beast’ Pat Cummins secures a hat-trick in T20 World Cup, becomes the 1st Aussie to do so after 17 years

Pat Cummins of Australia scored the first hat-trick of the 2017 T20 World Cup during his team's Super Eights encounter against Bangladesh. The 31-year-old dismissed Mahmuddulla and Mahedi Hasan in the final two deliveries of the 18th over, then returned to dismiss Towid Hridoy on the first ball of the final over for his sixth hat-trick in T20I World Cups. He ended the first innings with figures of 3/29.

With his extraordinary achievement, the AUS captain for ODIs and Tests has joined fellow Australian Brett Lee as the only other Australian to score a T20 World Cup hat-trick, which also happened against Bangladesh. Lee was the first to win a hat-trick in the showpiece event, back in 2007.

The great Australian was the only one to accomplish the feat until the 2021 season, when Ireland pacer Curtis Campher (2021), Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga (2021), and South African quick Kagiso Rabada joined the exclusive club.

Other bowlers who have claimed a hat-trick in the T20 World Cup include UAE's Karthik Meiyappan (2022) and Ireland's Joshua Little (2022).

Regarding the Australia vs Bangladesh clash, the Aussies were dominant throughout the first innings as they took key wickets and broke partnerships. The bowling attack was an absolute beast, but the Bangla Tigers were able to sustain the damage and reach the score of 140 runs.
