Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur's T20 World Cup campaign has been dealt a severe blow as she suffered an injury during the match against Pakistan on Sunday. The incident occurred while Harmanpreet was batting, and she was forced to leave the field in tears.
Harmanpreet Kaur injured
Harmanpreet had been batting brilliantly and was on the verge of securing a win for India, but the injury halted her progress. The severity of the injury is yet to be confirmed, but it could potentially end Harmanpreet's participation in the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup .
Despite Harmanpreet's untimely departure, India managed to secure a crucial 6-wicket victory over Pakistan , registering their first win in the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup . This victory comes as a relief after India's loss to New Zealand in their opening match.
The win against Pakistan was a much-needed boost for the Indian team, but the loss of their captain and most experienced player could be a significant setback. Harmanpreet's absence would not only affect the team's morale but also impact their batting lineup.
Indian batters made a heavy weather of a paltry 106-run target as it required a 24-ball-29 from their experienced skipper to eke out the crucial win.
The defensive approach by opener Shafali Verma (32 off 35 balls) and new No. 3 Jemimah Rodrigues (23 off 28 balls) meant that India could not boost their Net Run Rate which could prove very costly in the larger context of making it to the last-four stage.
Despite the victory, India's NRR is currently -1.217 and they remain below Pakistan , who are in third place with NRR of -0.555.
India would need to beat both Australia and Sri Lanka by comfortable margins to harbour any hopes of a semi-final berth.
